On Wednesday, Governor Kathy Hochul stood in Port Chester and announced the official groundbreaking of Westchester Crossing. The numbers: 957 housing units, $65 million in infrastructure investment, up to $10 million from the Mid-Hudson Momentum Fund, and 105 units designated affordable.
The site is the 15-acre former United Hospital campus. United closed in 2004. For 22 years, that parcel at the Port Chester/Rye border has been one of the Hudson Valley's most visible orphaned medical campuses. Multiple redevelopment proposals cycled through and never reached ground. This week, that changed.
The unit mix: 358 studios, 456 one-bedrooms, 143 two-bedrooms. Construction completion is targeted for 2027 with vertical development in phases.
This is the largest single groundbreaking Port Chester has seen in a generation. On top of the roughly 20,000 units already in motion across Yonkers, New Rochelle, and White Plains, it adds meaningful supply — and a Governor-level announcement tells you Albany wants to be seen putting money behind suburban housing.
But the Rye objections haven't disappeared. Residents have pointed at traffic spillover, school enrollment pressure, and density concerns. The groundbreaking doesn't resolve those concerns. It moves them from the hearing room to the construction fence.
Why it matters. What to watch: first vertical construction permits, formal Rye objections, updated traffic studies, and Metro-North's posture as 957 units start driving ridership through the Port Chester station.
