New Rochelle has unveiled a design for a rebuilt downtown transit center, tied to the city's broader push to redevelop the area around the station with new housing, retail, and public space. Construction is expected to begin this year, though an exact start date hasn't been independently confirmed.
Here's the number that matters: $100 million. That's the redesign proposal's cost, per primary trade reporting. Not $125 million — that larger figure belongs to a separate Yonkers-area project and has been circulating in secondary coverage, including twice in our own research process this month.
Why it matters: When a wrong dollar figure gets repeated often enough, it becomes accepted as fact and distorts how residents judge whether a project is well-funded or underfunded. The New Rochelle project sits inside the MTA's $7.7 billion five-year Metro-North capital commitment, part of a $68.4 billion systemwide plan already delivering new, lower-emission Siemens Charger locomotives to the Hudson Line.
Quick Hits
Heat and smoke advisories continue. Real-feel temperatures near 100 degrees and a wildfire-smoke air quality alert remain active countywide this week.
A healthcare workforce coalition launches. Manhattanville University's new Westchester Public Health Network brings together 32 organizations to build career pathways into local healthcare — a long-term answer to staffing shortages.
Wayfair's Yonkers store is coming in 2027. The retailer's first physical New York location will span roughly 114,000 square feet across 19 departments, a rare brick-and-mortar bet in a county watching other retailers pull back.
One More Thing
We caught ourselves repeating a wrong number twice this month before catching it. If you ever see a dollar figure in our reporting that looks off, reply and tell us — we'll run it down.
