Westchester County committed $50 million to install more than 750 EV charging ports at 79 sites across 24 municipalities. It is the largest coordinated clean transportation investment in the county's history, and it arrives just as the federal government is pulling back on EV incentives.

The program works like this: the county reimburses municipalities for up to 50% of eligible installation costs, funded by $5 million in direct county dollars, $35 million in capital budget allocations, and $15 million in local matching commitments. Libraries, parks, municipal lots, and transit hubs are the priority locations.

This builds on existing moves. Twenty-five free EV chargers went live at the County Center's South Parking Lot through a NYSERDA grant. The 2026 capital budget also includes $122.5 million to replace 94 aging hybrid Bee-Line buses.

Why it matters: The practical gap in Westchester is not on highways — it is in apartment complexes, commercial districts, and neighborhoods where residents cannot charge at home. Whether this program closes that gap depends on which municipalities apply and where they place the chargers. The NYLCV has specifically called for expanded charging in disadvantaged communities. Whether the county delivers on that will be worth watching.
